DETERMINATION, Bijo Karikkarappally

Determination is the act of determining, or the state of being determined. Bringing to an end; termination; limit. Direction or tendency to a certain end; impulsion. The quality of mind which reaches definite conclusions; decision of character; resoluteness. The state of decision; a judicial decision, or ending of controversy. That which is determined upon; result of deliberation; purpose; conclusion formed; fixed resolution. A flow, rush, or tendency to a particular part; as, a determination of blood to the head. The act, process, or result of any accurate measurement, as of length, volume, weight, intensity, etc.; as, the determination of the ohm or of the wave length of light; the determination of the salt in sea water, or the oxygen in the air. The act of defining a concept or notion by giving its essential constituents. The addition of a differentia to a concept or notion, thus limiting its extent; -- the opposite of generalization. The act of determining the relations of an object, as regards genus and species; the referring of minerals, plants, or animals, to the species to which they belong; classification; as, I am indebted to a friend for the determination of most of these shells.

Self determination is the principle in international law that nations have the right to freely choose their sovereignty and international political status with no external compulsion or external interference. The principle does not state how the decision is to be made, or what the outcome should be, whether it is independence, federation, protection, some form of autonomy or even full assimilation. Neither does it state what the delimitation between nations should be or even what constitutes a nation. In fact, there are conflicting definitions and legal criteria for determining which groups may legitimately claim the right to self-determination.

Coefficient of determination is a statistical method that explains how much of the variability of a factor can be caused or explained by its relationship to another factor. Coefficient of determination is used in trend analysis. It is computed as a value between 0 (0 percent) and 1 (100 percent). The higher value and the better fit. Coefficient of determination is symbolized by r2 because it is square of the coefficient of correlation symbolized by r. The coefficient of determination is an important tool in determining the degree of linear-correlation of variables ('goodness of fit') in regression analysis. It is also called r-square.
