GOOD, Velangkannan D.

GOOD

The Greek term 'agaths 'means good. The word good would mean 'having the right or desirable quality.' and bad in the sense of 'undesirable'; This implies a sense of moral judgment and a distinction between good or bad or right or wrong as embedded in every culture. Aristotle gives the definition: "good is what all desire." When the good is attained, it is experienced as pleasant, enjoyable and satisfying. But man experiences aversion no less than desire, pain no less than pleasure. Hence, good is always coupled with its opposite, evil.

G.e. Moore in his principia ethics has stated with much force that the term good, in the sense.  It is ethically importanted is capable of definition. It is true in the sense of formal logic that good cannot be defined because it has no higher genus to belong to. But good may be indirectly defined by connecting it with the conception of value. For value constitutes an order, one thing is more valuable than another, and what we mean by good in general is anything that has positive value. The supreme good would be that which has highest positive value that can be realized by man. The attainment of good generates happiness. Good and happiness are interrelated so that in the attainment of the supreme good one is supremely happy. The goal of man's ethical life is to reach supreme happiness, through a good life.

The famous saying goes like this "the good is to be rewarded but wrong is to be punished."

We all say that good should be awarded and the wrong should be punished. But in this world the good is forgotten. The wrong is remembered always in the society. The whole moral philosophy speaks of the good and evil.

Do good and avoid evil. This is great rule we should know in day today our lives. Most of the times the good deeds have punished and wrong deeds have rewarded. What are we going to do after having learned the morality?

There are mainly two kinds of goodness. Physical goodness is that which satisfies the demand if the nature of a being. Moral goodness is that which satisfies the demands of the moral law. Therefore, let's do good and make others to do good.
