DISCERNMENT, Sathish A.

DISCERNMENT, Sathish A.

The understanding of the word "discernment" is, to understand a distinction or to distinguish with the eye or mind, and another word that means or has the same meaning is, "detect" which throws the meaning, to discover or to bring to light, especially something hidden or obscure. Literally, 'discernment' means, 'to perceive with the eyes or intellect and as we know the similar word 'detect' which also means, 'to recognize or comprehend mentally, to perceive or recognize as being different or distinct, distinguish.' It is also said to perceive differences, but purely it means, 'the state of discerning by the faculty of vision or the intellect.'

If we, further, want to touch upon the meaning of the word is, 'the act or process of exhibiting keen insight and good judgment or keenness of insight and judgment.                      Some of us may know this quote, you shall judge a man by his foes as well as by his friends by Joseph Caned. I hope that all or many of us understand or got the meaning of this but I would like to add a little more beauty to the word 'discernment', it implies good judgment, it enables us to see and correct the mistakes of one's own and change oneself first. It can be cultivated by accepting oneself and finding changes in oneself. It also helps or makes the way to 'self – motivation' that is nothing but 'the mental determination and will to achieve what we want' and that can be cultivated by overcoming the negative qualities and expecting the best and always doing the best.

Normally, the idea that we, the Christians, have about the word or the term 'discernment' is, that which is related or connected to God and everybody is sure that it means, 'discerning the will of God.' Indeed, it is God who intervenes into our human life and makes us discern not our own will, desires or cravings but purely, we make the discernment or form the  on the will of God.

And therefore, every decision that we make, there is the help or assistance of our God in our life because we, as christians are very sure that it is god who has created us and gave the breath or gift of life to each one of us.
